The NorcalMLK Foundation, in partnership with the American Cathedral in Paris, presents Hearing the Light: The Gospel According to Thelonious Monk — a transcendent service of meditation, prayer, and sacred reflection. Featuring the new work of theologian Dr. Raymond Carr, this unique evening interweaves scripture, poetry, and theological insight with the enduring jazz genius of Thelonious Monk.

Held as part of the 2025 International Colloquium Series – Europe, the service features the interpretive brilliance of pianist Rob Clearfield and ensemble, performing Monk standards in conversation with the liturgy. This is jazz as sacred witness — sound as sermon, spirit, and social critique.

Joining Dr. Carr are distinguished American scholars and theologians:

  • - Dr. Dwight Hopkins, University of Chicago
  • - Rev. Dr. Andrea C. White, Union Theological Seminary in the City of New York
  • - Dr. Aaron Grizzell, NorcalMLK Foundation

Together, they will explore how Monk’s music and the Black religious tradition speak light into uncertainty, echoing the series’ theme: The Meaning of Community in the Age of Uncertainty.

All are welcome. The service will be followed by an informal reception.
