The SIDGE Conversation is a pivotal forum where leading technologists, scholars, and experts engage in candid and thought-provoking discussions on the ethical implications of AI decision-making and other transformative ideas.

During the SIDGE Conversation, participants explore the ethical challenges and opportunities presented by AI systems. They delve into critical issues such as bias mitigation, transparency, accountability, and the broader impact of AI on marginalized communities. This conversation not only raise awareness but also inspire concrete actions and ethical guidelines that guide the responsible development and deployment of AI technologies.

The guests include:
  • Sylvester Johnson, Ph.D. is co-founder and CEO of the Corporation for Public Interest Technology, a Washington D.C. based public benefit corporation dedicated to assisting organizations in overcoming the difficulties of creating ethical AI. He leads a team of AI, ethics, and policy professionals that work to influence a future in which technology serves humanity by conducting risk evaluations and involving stakeholders throughout the process. Dr. Johnson is also Professor of Black Studies at Northwestern University, with a focus on race, technology, and religion.
  • Andreen Soley is director of the Public Interest Technology University Network (PIT-UN), whose mission is to help advance the field of public interest technology to bring positive impact to communities around the globe. Public interest technology refers to a set of practices to design, deploy, and govern technology in ways that advance the public interest. PIT-UN fosters collaboration between universities and colleges to build the field of public interest technology and nurture a new generation of civic-minded technologists.
  • Moderator Dwight N. Hopkins, Ph.D., Ph.D. is the Laura Spelman Rockefeller Professor at the University of Chicago and the co-founder of the NorcalMLK Foundation's Center for Social Impact, Development, and Global Engagement (the SIDGE Center). Dr. Hopkins is a globally renown constructive theologian who focuses on innovation and people having agency. He holds that "one of the greatest challenges is the lack of cultural understanding," and he maintains that there exists a connection between transcendent values, technological innovation, and wealth management that requires deeper exploration and engagement.

This event serves as a vital platform for interdisciplinary dialogue, offering diverse perspectives and insights into the ethical and societal implications of AI, ensuring that technological advancements align with human values and contribute positively to a more equitable and just world.
